England 2-2 Macedonia, 16th October 2002

This game is the only senior men’s international that Saints’ stadium has held before Tuesday’s clash with Kosovo.

It proved to be a lively affair with four goals and a red card, but it was a result that a star-studded England side would have been disappointed with in their Euro 2004 qualifying campaign.

Macedonia took the lead in the 11th minute, but David Beckham equalised with an exquisite lob from outside the penalty area.

The visitors went ahead again midway through the first-half and the scoring in the match was complete when Steven Gerrard netted a trademark volley 10 minutes before half-time. Alan Smith was later sent off in second-half stoppage-time for two bookable offences.

This did prove to be an important draw for England in the end when they finished as winners of their Euro 2004 qualifying group by a point.
