Fans at St Mary’s were given a look at the future of the England team when an Under-21 international was played on the South Coast.

Stuart Pearce’s side was littered with players who have gone on to become Premier League and England senior team regulars, but many have failed to make the step up so successfully.

In the match, England were the superior side throughout and went 2-0 ahead after a James Milner double.

Saints academy product Theo Walcott then rounded off the win with a well-taken goal and duly saluted his former home stadium having moved to Arsenal two years earlier.
