Saints 3-2 Sheffield United, 2007/08 Championship

A vital day in Saints’ recent history and one that will live long in the memory of the club’s fans.

Nigel Pearson’s side needed a win in this last day fixture to secure safety in the Championship, but found themselves up against a Blades side with slim hopes of making the play-offs.

A rollercoaster afternoon for Saints fans began when they saw their side fall behind to a Stephen Quinn header, but Marek Saganowski levelled the game just before half-time.

Saints’ season top-scorer Stern John scored twice either side of a Jon Stead goal to secure the win, but was also sent-off with 10 minutes remaining.

His side held on to stay up though despite a nervy ending to the game.

Saints team: Richard Wright, Chris Perry, Darren Powell, Jermaine Wright, Youssef Safri, Inigo Idiakez (Mario Licka 79), Jhon Viafara, Andrew Surman, Jason Euell, Stern John, Marek Saganowski (Adam Lallana 73)
