Contrasting Form

Despite what has been said about both sides having the similar opening season records. Since the defeat to Liverpool in the second game week of the season, Southampton have been rather consistent in either putting in good performances or in picking up wins and points in fixtures in which they have not been impressive in.

The 2-0 victory against Brighton showed capabilities in that Hasenhuttl’s team can still win games despite not being on the front foot; whilst performances against Manchester United and Sheffield United were great in places in arguably the most competitive Premier League season, seven points in their last three games is rather impressive.

Even against the likes of Liverpool, the Saints were extremely unlucky to not snatch a draw given the chances that they passed up. Burnley on the opening day is the only game were the south-coast club were extremely lacklustre.

On the contrast, despite having a similar record to Southampton, the cherries have just come off a three-game winless streak having beaten Everton 3-1 in the previous game week. However, on the road in the Premier League; Eddie Howe’s men have lost 12 of their last 16 games, and as mentioned have failed to win at St. Mary’s in the last six outings.

Coming into this game, both teams will be positive of getting a result in coming off a win in their most recent fixture, but form would suggest that the Saints are in a better stride of results and performances at the present time.
