Correct decisions give Saints two lifelines

After Ake’s opener, a breakaway saw Bournemouth get what they thought was their second goal of the contest.

Josh King was played through one-on-one with Angus Gunn and curled a perfect finish into the far corner, but VAR ruled the strike out after showing that King’s foot had been in an offside position when the ball was slid through.

Then – in the vital opening stages of the second-half – Saints were rightly awarded a penalty when Che Adams was taken down in the area by a late challenge from Steve Cook.

James Ward-Prowse confidently dispatched the spot-kick and sparked a strong showing from his side in the second period.
