A disappointing result for Southampton on Friday evening and Hasenhuttl shows he needs to figure who his best eleven are.

Bournemouth took the earlier lead through a combination of sloppy defending and solid finishing. They could have easily been up 3-0 at the half but VAR disallowed a from Josh King.

The second half, was much more positive for Southampton but poor finishing let their comeback hopes down. Now let us look at the ratings

Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl – 5

His team selection left many to scratch their heads and ask what was the gaffer thinking here? He started players out of position and no one really looked comfortable from the start. I think this will act as a bit of a wake-up call for Ralph Hasenhuttl as this match was one of his first real blunders as manager of the Saints.

I have to believe the Austrian is not one to repeat his mistakes so this will likely be a one-off match and we will see better decisions moving forward.

Angus Gunn – 5

A match the young keeper will like to forget. 3 goals went past him but it would have really been hard to have kept any of them out. The Ake header was a bullet and Gunn stood no chance, the second was a well finished ball and we are not going to talk about what happened for the third goal.

Gunn, has been in good form and I suspect he and the rest of the team will bounce back from this performance.

Kevin Danso – 4

Just really a bad performace here by the young defender but it would be harsh to put all the blame on him. He was played at right-back, a position he has never played before, and looked wildly uncomfrotable.

Safe to say, we probably won’t see Danso back at right-back anytime soon.

Jan Bednarek – 6

The Polish international, outside of the blunder at the end of the match, had a solid performance. He was solid in the air and his tackles were solid as well. He keeps proving why he is our best centre-back just the errors need to be cut down if we want to have a successful season.

Jannik Vestergaard – 5.5

The Dane, who had hit a good run of form, had one of his lesser performances on Friday. He looked slow and got turned around often. It was a sloppy match for most everyone in the home side. HIs best moments came when he went forward with the ball and gave Bournemouth something to deal with when he was willing to step up with the ball into the midfield.

Cedric – 6

Cedric, like Danso, started on the wrong side and did not look comfortable. It was not until the second half when Ryan Bertand came out that he was able to switch back to the Right side and he looked much much better.

He was a threat going forward in the second half as the Saints pursued a result and should only be playing on the right-side form here on out
