Portsmouth 0-4 Southampton: Carabao Cup – Player Ratings
By Erik Franzo
Strikers and Substitutes
Danny Ings, Striker – 9
Broke the tension in a big moment with his 21st minute goal. The turn was positive and the finish was even better into the far corner. His second goal was an excellently timed run and a deft chip of the keeper. What should not go unnoticed was his defencive effort in support of set pieces and breaking out in transition. Played like the game was not bigger than him, and may have made himself a legend in the process. His finishing touch was driving the ball forward for Cedric’s goal.
Che Adams, Striker – 5
Was nearly non-existent in the first half. Got very little of the ball and when he did he played with tension and often too quickly. Opened the second half with a great run to get the ball in attacking position and just gets lost on the ball. Was desperate to add to the 4 goal lead late, and ran himself into the ground, which means the goalless streak is starting to take its toll.
Michael Obafemi, Striker – 7
All that needs to be said about Michael is what a beautiful pass he made to finds Ings for the second goal. It was inch-perfect and honestly an unexpected surprise. Some good hold up play mixed in, but no shots on target.
Nathan Redmond, Substitute, Striker – 7
Got himself a wonderful goal, which boosts his rating. Could have done a little bit more with a tired Portsmouth defence down the stretch.
Shane Long, Substitute, Striker – N/A
Came on late to close the game out, but not enough time to offer a rating. One does have to wonder how often we will see him, and if at all after the January window.
