Immortality beckons for Hasenhuttl and the players

This was the big one. For all of the disappointed fans streaming out of St Marys following the Bournemouth defeat, every one of them would have taken that result if it meant inflicting a four nil thumping at the home of the “Skates”.

Local boy Ings will have dreamed of moments like last night his entire life, epitomised by the defiant post goal celebratory slide towards the home fans and the cocked ear as the abuse rained down. Older fans still fondly eulogise Steve Moran’s winner at Fratton in 1984 but with derbies like this few and far between, Ings’ brace was something to savour through the ages for the Southampton faithful.

As for Hasenhuttl, he merits praise for treating the fixture with the respect it deserves and whatever else he might deliver this season, he will be forever etched in the hearts of the fans for bringing this glorious night of triumph. Football is made for these moments, which momentarily elevate fans from the mundanity of everyday life to fleeting paradise. For Ings and Hasenhuttl, they have now become immortals in Southampton folklore.
