Southampton experienced a sobering afternoon against a dogged Tottenham side, despite playing for 60 minutes with a man advantage.

Although through no lack of endeavour, Saints were unable to unlock the Spurs defence after Ings had been gifted an equaliser by some calamitous footwork by Hugo Lloris.

Unfortunately for the away side, the opener from Ndombele coupled with Harry Kane’s inevitable 43rd minute finish proved decisive in a game affected by Aurier’s early sending off. Tottenham keeper Lloris redeemed himself with two outstanding saves in the second half as Southampton huffed and puffed to no avail.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s run of four away wins with clean sheets came to a deflating end at Tottenham’s impressive new stadium. In normal circumstances,  suffering a 2-1 defeat to Spurs would not be the most dishonourable of outcomes but with the numerical advantage, this will feel like a missed opportunity for most supporters.
