Danny Ings

One of the few players to come out of the game with any credit, Danny Ings scored his fourth goal in three games with a good run into the box to meet Valery’s low cross. Whilst there was an element of fortune involved as the ball appeared to cannon off of Zouma’s boot onto the oncoming Ings, credit is due for the striker’s positioning and desire to get in the mix.

Although local born Ings has had to wait for his opportunity, he looks keen to retain his place and has bought into Hasenhuttl’s pressing game. With Adams still yet to register a competitive goal for Southampton, Ings has led the line well whilst the former has been rested. That being said, Saints need to do more to get the ball into the box and allow Ings’ predatory instincts to do the rest.

If Djenepo returns from injury, Hasenhuttl will have an opportunity to restore a goal threat to what is currently a painfully goal-shy team. With Redmond and Boufal firing blanks currently, pressure will remain on Ings to stay fit. If nothing else, he is on track to finish in double figures, a feat which has not been achieved for a significant period by a Southampton player.
