Four Southampton players were in action yesterday representing their countries in a variety of competitions with varying success.

Michael Obafemi, Stuart Armstrong, Jan Bednarek, and Maya Yoshida all represented their home countries across a variety of competitions. Let’s start the round-up with the youngest and work our way up.

Obafemi represented Ireland as they took on Italy in the U21 Euro’s. He was not in the starting lineup for the nil-nil draw but did manage to be make an appearance in the 68th minute. Obviously, he did not manage to net a goal for his home country but it has to be a good experience for the youngster and always a point of pride to represent your home country.

Next, Jan Bednarek continues to start for Poland. Bednarek, had himself a busy day keeping Latvia scoreless and riding a Robert Lewandowski hat-trick to a 3-0 victory. He played all 90 minutes, completed 71 passes, had 2 tackles, and 7 interceptions. If he keeps performing like this for the national team, Poland are looking at a mainstay in their backline for a long time coming.

Stuart Armstrong, only got to see the pitch for 8 minutes plus stoppage time as Scotland lost to Russia 4-0 on Thursday. He was not able to have much of an impact on the match so hopefully he gets the start in their next match.

Finally, we have Maya Yoshida representing his home nation of Japan. The Japanese took on Mongolia in World Cup Qualifiers and they smashed their opponents 6-0 and Yoshida even managed to find the back of the net himself. Yoshida, has been a rock and a constant at the back for Japan over the years and it is good to see him scoring a goal for his country in meaningful matches.

That is it for the Saints that were in action yesterday. With more games to come hopefully we have more things to write about.
