Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders
Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 5
Questions about whether his chosen line-up was the right one. Nobody is perfect, but he isn’t the one to blame for this capitulation.
A team full of players who wanted to fight for the club wouldn’t have lost 9-0 after the early red card, and Ralph must’ve felt helpless out there on the touchline.
Angus Gunn, Goalkeeper – 3
Not all the goals were his fault, but he now looks a shadow of his former self and devoid of confidence.
Having had Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy go from reliable to being dropped for a drop in performance levels, the club really need to look at how they train and keep their goalkeepers believing in themselves.
Yan Valery, Right Wing-Back – 2
No urgency when closing down and no awareness. Initially a bright prospect, but maybe there was a reason that Hasenhuttl preferred Cedric more recently.
Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 5
Probably the only Saints defender who can come away with any credit at all. One or two clearances to deny any further Leicester goals, but also gave away the penalty for the ninth.
Maya Yoshida, Centre-Back – 2
Went from Mr. Reliable to Mr. Unreliable. Particularly poor in letting Vardy score fifth and playing Perez onside for the sixth.
Jannik Vestergaard, Centre-Back – 3
Part of a horrendous defensive display that was ruthlessly punished by Leicester. Sacrificed at half-time as Hasenhuttl changed system to try and reserve some pride.
Ryan Bertrand, Left Wing-Back – 3
Early sending off had a huge effect on his teammates after conceding the opening goal in the same phase of the match. Perhaps accidental, perhaps given a bad pass from Ings, but should he be diving in like that so early on?
