Southampton sink to an extraordinary new low as Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez score hat tricks in an extraordinary 9-0 Leicester win.

Saints fans have seen their fair share of low lights at St Mary’s. Cardiff, Chelsea, and even Derby County have all inflicted various types of humiliation on home soil, but Friday night’s tie brought things down to a whole new level.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men started sluggishly and failed to show much composure on the ball. Although SFC offered little going forward they were all too easily breached at the back.

The weather was shambolic, and the football was even worse. The Foxes took the lead with 10 minutes gone and never looked back.

The result marks the worst defeat in club history as well as tying the worst ever Premier League score line. As you can imagine after such a traumatic experience, social media was its usual supportive and warm-hearted self….. Not!

Instead of attempting to narrow down the omnishambles to just three key moments, here are nine key tweets that aptly sum up the evening’s embarrassment.

Some of them are funny and some of them have something to say about the state the club finds itself in. There are usually several ways you can tell your team hasn’t played particularly well.

This includes but is not limited to, fans leaving after half an hour, remaining supporters boooing their discontent, while the opposition faithful mocks from the away stand.

What isn’t typical however, is seeing those from outside the football family get in on the act.

Topical panel show Have I Got News For You wasn’t shy about voicing its opinion. Despite being known for its political satire the BBC program simply said:

Unsurprisingly, Ipswich Town were also keen to share their feelings. In 1995 the Tractor Boys conceded nine at old Trafford for the Premier League’s largest defeat. The Suffolk outfit welcomed Saints into the ignominious club with the following message:
