Jack Stephens

Often the figure of ridicule amongst Southampton fans, there is no lacking the effort that Stephens put in against the Merseyside club. There were brave attempts to piece moves together out from the back and in a three man defence, he looks less exposed than in a central duo.

With Bednarek seeming undroppable currently, Stephens does offer a little bit of pace alongside the Pole, an attribute which is severely lacking from the third component of the defensive line, Jannik Vestergaard.

A confidence player, Stephens could benefit from an extended run in the team; the sooner Hasenhuttl decides on a settled defence the better as the constant tinkering is undermining what little confidence is left in a fragile environment.
