Southampton gave themselves something to build on as they claimed a vital 2-1 win over Watford on Saturday.

Despite a largely disjointed performance in front of their home crowd, a burst of enthusiasm, technique and skill in the final 20 minutes saw them take a first win of the season at St Mary’s.

This may prove to be the game that changes their fortunes and one that sees them overcome mental barriers that had previously been halting them in their tracks.

Watford had led for much of the game after Ismaila Sarr’s opening goal and will point to some VAR controversy after losing this most crucial match in their season.

Saints now look ahead with motivation to secure more points in upcoming clashes with Norwich City, Newcastle United and West Ham.
