Win Keeps Southampton in Touch

The EPL may have only just completed its 14th week, but Saturday evening’s affair already had the air of a must win encounter. The victor would stay in touch with the pack while the loser would only be cut further adrift. Had the Hampshire outfit not prevailed they would be going into Wednesday’s match with Norwich city an uncomfortable five points off the pace. This is effectively six points when taking into consideration a terrible goal difference.

Fellow scrappers Aston Villa and the Canaries picked up creditable draws against Manchester United and Arsenal to keep the pressure on.

Southampton may be in a relegation scrap, but the fixture list has fallen kindly for them. As well as a test against The Norfolk opponents, Saints are also set to face fellow strugglers, Newcastle, West Ham, and Aston Villa.

These contests are unlikely to be straightforward, but you can’t ask for much more winnable games than those who are in the same drop zone mess. If the club can pick up the majority of points against their nearest foes, then they’ll be in a great position to not only stay up but push up a condensed table.

There is currently only eight points between Southampton in 18th and Tottenham in fifth. While a Europa League spot is extremely unlikely it does show what even a small run of wins can do.
