Southampton dropped more points from a winning position after surrendering the lead against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Danny Ings – who else? – gave Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side the lead shortly after half-time at St James’ Park, but goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Federico Fernandez turned the game on its head.

Saints had done well to turn things around and claim seven points from their last three league games, but this result should act as another reality check.

Having been on top for much of the game and after creating the best chances to score a second goal, the importance of securing the points the deserve with composure in defence and attack must be reaffirmed.

Upcoming meetings with West Ham and Aston Villa have the potential to provide another important boost but the players must be fully focused on the task at hand.
