Andy Townsend

Saints brought in Townsend after he had just one year with non-league outfit Weymouth and took a bit of a punt on him proving himself at a higher level.

However, he was a regular in three years at the Dell and eventually moved on to Norwich to make Saints a significant profit.

A £1m move to Chelsea was then followed by a switch to Aston Villa in 1993 as the English First Division became the Premier League.

Republic of Ireland international Townsend made 150 appearances whilst at Villa Park and retired in 2000 after a 20-year footballing career.
