2020 got off to a winning start for the Saints after a Danny Ings first-half goal was the difference at St Mary’s stadium.

The English striker, who now has 15 goals in all competitions, latched onto the end of a Jack Stephens through ball before scooping the ball over former Saint Toby Alderweireld and volleying the ball home past Paulo Gazzaniga in the Tottenham net.

Spurs had a host of chances in the game, with the most notable of which falling to Harry Kane. Christian Eriksen’s whipped free-kick found the foot of the forward, but his strike, which beat Alex McCarthy in the Southampton goal, was ruled out for offside.

Three points for the Saints has lifted them into 12th position in the league, five points above 18th placed Bournemouth, but also just five points behind 7th placed Wolves.

The victory also means that the red and whites have won three of their last four games, beating Aston Villa and Chelsea as well as Spurs.

Southampton will look to continue their good form when they play their third match at home inside seven days against Huddersfield in an FA Cup clash on Saturday, with their next league fixture against high-flying Leicester City the following weekend.
