Strikers and Substitutes

Danny Ings, Striker – 8

Ings once again made the difference for Southampton. The former Burnley player is in fine form at the moment, with a total of 15 goals in all competitions, with yesterday’s strike arguably the best of the lot.

Running onto the end of Stephens ball over the top, Ings had the confidence to flick in the ball over the onrushing Alderweireld and lashed the ball home with his weaker left side.

The 27-year-old lacked chances in the final third for the rest of the game, but his ability to hold up the ball and bring teammates into play was vital to the Saints attacking plays.

Nathan Redmond, Striker – 7

Playing a more advanced role against Tottenham, Redmond only had one clear cut opportunity in the game, slaloming past a couple of Spurs defenders before firing the ball down the center of the goal from just a few yards out.

Despite a few direct runs with the ball, it is clear to see that Redmond prefers to play out on the wing, with the twenty-five-year-old regularly dropping deeper and picking the ball up out wide.

The former Norwich man also had a hand in the clean sheet, making a vital tackle on the edge of the box with just minutes to play.

Shane Long, 1st Substitute – 7

The Irish forward came on for Djenepo just before the hour mark and did exactly what was needed of him. The forward allowed Southampton to play in a more direct fashion when required, knowing that Long’s areal presence would give them a good chance of retaining the ball high up the field.

Despite only being on the pitch for just over half an hour, the 32-year-old won 7 areal duels in the match, only bettered by Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen.

The former West Bromwich Albion striker also had a good chance to score in the match, but his headed effort bounced just wide of the goal.

Michael Obafemi, 2nd Substitute – 6

The teenage forward was given limited time to make an impact on the game, with the striker only being able to touch the ball on eight occasions in the 15 minutes Hasenhuttl handed him.

Oriol Romeu, 3rd Substitute – N/A

The Spanish midfielder came on with just five minutes of added time to be played, coming on for Armstrong to add a level of defensive solidity to help Southampton hold out their one-goal advantage.
