Southampton progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Championship side Huddersfield at St Mary’s.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be quietly pleased with the professional manner his young team defeated the Terriers, in what could have proved to be a banana skin.

In-form Saints made ten changes from the team which prevailed over Spurs, with only James Ward-Prowse surviving the tactical switch up. Goals from 19 year old Will Smallbone and Jake Vokins were sufficient to see off Huddersfield, whilst VAR narrowly ruled out a tidy Shane Long finish by a mere whisker.

Although Huddersfield were industrious in their approach, the difference in quality proved decisive between the two teams. With Danso and Vestergaard both given rare chances to shine, in truth neither was ever really troubled by the Huddersfield attack.
