Leicester City 1-2 Southampton: Premier League – Saints Player Ratings
By Erik Franzo
Manager, Goalkeeper, and Defenders
Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 9
Ralph seems to have his preferred eleven and that is who started today. What this man has done since the 0-9 defeat is unbelievable. The result today has to feel like an amazing accomplishment, because changing the mentality of an entire club in such a short period of time is just that. Hasenhuttl has the individuals he trusts and found the system that works. He played yo-yo with his substitutes down the stretch, but literally has a team that looks like they can beat anyone in the Premier League at the moment.
Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 8
Still looking for him to come up with the massive save, as in the Praet goal. He got across it, but was still beaten. In the 52nd minute he provided the spark, a reactionary save, keeping out a Johnny Evans headed corner. Added another two big saves to close it out and has distanced himself even more as the 1st goalkeeper.
Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 8
Looked more locked in and determined after taking the red card in the reverse fixture. Defended for most of the game with only one or two forward runs. Cut out a pass late in the game that may have gone unnoticed, but it was massive. Really good to see he is enjoying his football because that is when he is his best.
Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back -7
Poor awareness to not step or drop on the quick free kick that led to the first goal. Recovered on a poor angle and left Praet free at the back post. Noticeably improved with his jumping and winning the ball in the air. Another sound performance as part of a partnership that is hard to crack.
Jack Stephens, Centre-Back – 8
Was no where to be seen on the quick free kick with Vardy running down his side. Although he stepped really well to the ball, cutting out the pass which led to Armstrong’s goal. Got away with the disallowed Vardy goal because he did not recover to his position. Almost scored a goal from a Bertrand free kick, having it cleared off the line just before it went in.
Cedric Soares, Right-Back – 7
Defended really well in this game when he wasn’t just throwing his body into defenders. Maybe one of his best all-around games in recent memory as he played both sides of the ball and covered the Leicester counter more than once.
