Shane Long

Fans will always be divided in their appraisal of the Irish striker. For some he doesn’t score enough to justify a starting berth whilst for others, Long is the milk to Ings’ cookie with his unrelenting work rate and searing pace a perfect compliment to his strike partner’s finishing.

Although Danny Ings was unable to scale his recent heights at St Mary’s, Long was fantastic throughout the Wolves game and ran himself into the ground for the common cause. His goal has been a while in the making and he was unlucky not to add to his total with only the woodwork standing in his way.

A fine reward for his efforts over the last few weeks, the goal was not sufficient to see Southampton home and Long was unfortunate not to be on the winning side. It has been common for Long to go on goal scoring runs so do not be surprised if the 32 year old scores against Palace on Tuesday.
