Saints 2-2 Derby County (Derby win 5-3 on pens), 2018/19 season
After going two-nil up at Pride Park but ending up with a 2-2 draw and a replay back at St Mary’s, Saints would not have wanted to do the same thing again on their own turf.
Two goals in two second-half minutes from Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond looked to have put Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side on track for the next round, but Derby hit back with strikes from Harry Wilson and Martyn Waghorn to force extra-time and then penalties.
Normal time scorer Redmond missed his spot-kick and led to an eventual 5-3 win on penalties for the Rams – then managed by Frank Lampard.
