Shane Long is going to be sticking around on the South Coast for another two years as he will sign an extension with the club soon.

According to the telegraph, The Irish international and Southampton are on the verge of agreeing to a new contract that will see the striker stay with the club for a couple more years.

Long, has had a bit of a renaissance season despite still not scoring at a clip you would expect from a striker. He is the perfect strike partner for Danny Ings because Long is so willing to run and do the dirty work that sets up his teammates for success.

He is truly one of the more selfless players in football and you can see how happy he is for his teammates when they score. If you had not seen who scored that goal you would have thought it was Long himself each and every time.

I believe it is a smart move for the club to keep Long around for another season or two to allow players like Obafemi and Adams develop more and really understand their role within Hasenhuttl’s system. He likely is not going to cost the club very much when it comes to his wages and he understands his role.

I look forward to seeing the Long and Ings partnership flourish for the foreseeable future and hopefully he starts to pick up some goals along the way as well.
