Midfielders

James Ward-Prowse, Centre-Midfielder – 7

Saints fans were happy to see JWP return after the nasty injury in the FA Cup.  Battled against a physical Burnley side and played every minute as usual.  Whipped in a few quality corner kicks and helped Southampton win possession in the disappointing loss.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Centre-Midfielder – 7

One of the more cleaner games from the Saints.  Good in possession, used his body well to win the ball back, and excellent positioning throughout.  Had the best chance to equalize late on and it would be harsh to say he did a lot wrong hitting Nick Pope with his strike.

Sofiane Boufal, Attacking-Midfielder – 7

Was given the start with Nathan Redmond injured.  Looked up for the game from the very beginning by attacking off the dribble as usual.  Hit Jack Stephens with a cross which came back off the bar.  Unfortunately appeared to injure his left foot and had to be removed after just a half hour. Could be argued the game was lost when he exited.

Stuart Armstrong, Attacking-Midfielder – 6

Not sure he brought much to the game today.  A half-hearted half volley aside, and some pressing to create turnovers he did not make the mark along with many of his teammates.
