In wet and windy conditions at St Mary’s, Southampton succumbed to a physical and ultimately ruthless Burnley side.
In truth, Southampton inflicted more damage to their chances of winning than Storm Dennis ever could have done.
Saints were lacklustre and underwhelming in a much changed side from their recent victories. The decision to leave out the in form Nathan Redmond was enforced due to injury, whilst Vestergaard was a surprise inclusion over the usually reliable Jan Bednarek. Finally Kyle Walker-Peters made his long awaited debut at right back with a promising performance.
Burnley opened the scoring direct from a corner after just 90 seconds. Danny Ings responded with a well taken finish from the edge of the box, taking his total to 18 for the season across all competitions. However, a superb second half strike from Vydra was enough to secure the points for Sean Dyche’s Clarets.
