There’s No Place like Away from Home

The prevailing football wisdom is that if you want to succeed,  avoid defeat at home and do your best on the road. Most enterprising sides looking to breach the top half, will be propelled by a good if not fortress like home form.

St Mary’s on the other hand has been anything but a fortress for its owners and has been the bane of the campaign. Whether it’s the schooling by Chelsea, the Wolves’ meltdown, or the Leicester debacle, a season-ticket has not been good value this term.

Of the squad’s nine victories six have come on their travels. This includes victories over three of the league’s top five. In stark contrast, eight of 13 losses have come at home.

With 12 games left of the season and half in Hampshire, Combining a strong visiting form with a few big home wins, Southampton could yet find themselves in Europe. Equally, if the away success wanes the team needs something to secure them.

home sweet home can still make or break SFC. Hasenhüttl’s Charges currently sit seven points clear of the drop zone and five points from eighth place.

Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Brighton must all make the trip to our neck of the woods. While the Geordie’s are on the same points as Saints the other two are in relegation trouble.

If Southampton prevail in these crucial three match ups it will almost certainly propel them to safety and a respectable finish, lose and the relegation dogfight will be back on.

The team must quickly get over there home turf blues or it will cost them one way or the other.
