Alf Ramsey

Ramsey started his higher level football career with Saints and signed after impressing against them in a reserve team game.

Having served in the army during World War Two, Ramsey became a key first-team player with the club in 1946.

His managerial career is much more renowned though given what he achieved in his 11 years in charge of the England national team.

Ramsey’s tactical nous and man-management were key as England won the World Cup in 1966 – still the Three Lions’ only major tournament win to date.
