Just Not Our Day

The visitors opened the second half strongly and could have found themselves level two minutes after the restart.

Ryan Bertrand delivers an inviting ball towards the back post. Shane Long races towards the ball, but can’t get there in time to bring it under control. Had he done so the Irishman would surely have been able to fire past a helpless keeper.

The football is then put back into the proverbial mixer, flashing across the box twice in quick succession. Try as they might though, the away side couldn’t get the telling touch to test Łukasz Fabiański .

This was Southampton’s best and perhaps only significant second half threat. Fabiański had very little to do, as his opponents struggled to find the killer blow in the final third. Saints were neat in possession, but rarely did this result in a direct assault on goal.
