Southampton vs. Newcastle: Can Saints Rebound After Defeat
Southampton are coming off a disappointing defeat to West Ham last weekend and look to rebound against Newcastle this Saturday in St. Mary’s.
The first meeting between the two saw Newcastle take the points with a come-from-behind victory back in December.
Southampton, have had some trouble with Newcastle the past few seasons. They have not beaten the Magpies since April of 2016. This Saturday will be as good as chance as any to reverse their fortune against the London side.
The teams are neighbors on the table with Southampton above Newcastle by two points. So let us see how each team could win this match.
How Will Southampton Win
Southampton have turned in some pretty inconsistent performances recently and people really do not know who will show up. Last match, they looked a step slow and the score line proved it as they lost 3-1 to West Ham.
The Saints are not at full strength either. They will be missing the likes of Nathan Redmond, Stuart Armstrong, and Will Smallbone so we could see a very different lineup than we are used to this weekend.
Regardless of the attacking options Ralph throws out there keeping Newscastle scoreless or to a goal at most will be the key to victory. Newcastle do not have a very potent attack so limiting their chances is a must. If they can do that I think the Saints will be victorious.
How Will Newcastle Win
For Newcastle, this match will have to play out very similarly to the previous matchup. They need to get in front of Southampton’s shots and force them to either miss the target or get their attempts blocked.
It is likely they will setup a deep block and all the Saints to have the majority of the possession then look to hit on the counter with their speed.
The Magpies have not won a Premier League match since mid-January so they will be looking to take advantage of one of the worst home sides in the league and collect 3 points.
