An early red card for Moussa Djenepo contributed to a frustrating one nil defeat for Southampton at home to Newcastle.

Despite the home fans creating a rocking atmosphere at St Mary’s, Saints were unable to capitalise on the recent run of bad form for the Magpies.

The hosts did have chances to sneak an unlikely victory, with Shane Long culpable for a failure to square a pass to Danny Ings for what would surely have been a goal. An unfortunate red card for Djenepo, was promptly followed by a penalty conceded by fellow attacker Sofiane Boufal but an inspired Alex McCarthy was able to save smartly.

The lively Saint-Maximin eventually scored late on in the second half to condemn Saints to another home defeat. He was alert to a careless mistake by Yan Valery, himself only returned to the Southampton side for first after a prolonged absence.
