Southampton 0-1 Newcastle: Premier League – Three Key Saints Players
Alex McCarthy
Being a Saints keeper hasn’t been much fun in recent seasons. With a leaky defence in front, not to mention with very little consistency in terms of selection, it is fair to say Gunn and McCarthy have both struggled for form.
McCarthy was absolutely outstanding against Newcastle, in a storming performance reminiscent of his blistering form which won him player of the season two years ago. Although the penalty save will attract plaudits, he made several top notch saves to keep his comrades in the game.
His triple save to deny Gayle and Almiron almost defied belief, whilst his heroics helped inspire an electric atmosphere which has been sorely missing in recent months. Sadly there was little he could do about the winner after Valery’s error left the goal exposed.
