Same Old Saints Same Old Story

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. SFC work hard but lose to a moment of indecision or indiscretion. It’s an issue that has plagued every member of the back line over multiple seasons.

This time around it was the returning Yan Valery who committed the crucial mistake. The fullback who has been sidelined for several months, attempted to head the ball down only to find Saint-Maximin taking it away.

The Frenchman could have attempted to play it back to his shot stopper or hack it away. Instead he was caught unawares, which left McCarthy powerless to stop the goal bound shot.

Southampton’s defensive frailties have been written about ad nauseam and yet the side can hardly get through a hat-trick of games without shooting themselves in the foot.

Sadly, it’s stating the obvious to say the club needs defensive upgrades in the summer because the current personnel can’t find the crucial consistency they need to prosper in the top-flight.

Having had games against the likes of, Burnley, West Ham, and Aston Villa, fans surely would’ve expected the team to push towards a significant spot in the top half and a potential European spot. Three points from a possible nine have now surely put paid to that.

With only two wins required to reach 40 points and presumed safety, it won’t be long until Southampton get out the metaphorical bucket and spade. A disappointing end to a promising period.
