Southampton are linked with another defender and this time it is Bristol Rovers centre-back Alfie Kilgour who has caught the team’s attention.

Kilgour, is a 21-year-old defender who is in his first full season with Bristol Rovers and has been a rock in the back. He has made 43 appearances for the club in all competitions and has actually managed to net three goals thus far.

His defensive numbers are more than solid and he is built a little shorter than your average centre-back but that has not deterred clubs from sending scouts to go watch the player.

Southampton would face competition from their South Coast neighbors Bournemouth, as well as Millwall and Queens Park Rangers. Where Saints could have an advantage over these other clubs is Hasenhuttl’s willingness to develop and play young players.

In his tenure so far, Ralph has made it quite clear he prefers to develop younger players into the kind of player he wants and prefers them to older players who may be less willing to learn a new style of football.

At 21-years-of-age, Alfie would be a perfect fit for the club. He may not come into the starting XI immediately but after a few months of development we could see him step-up into a sub or starting roll and making an impact on the squad.

Over the past few weeks Southampton have been linked with a number of defenders and it is easy to see that will be the priority over the summer. I think whatever money they recoup from the sale of Vestergaard will likely fund the purchase of a new defender or two.
