Southampton have had a bit of a question mark when it comes to who is their best goalkeeping options over the past few seasons.

McCarthy, Gunn, and we will even toss Forster in here for good measure, have all had their moments both good and bad in net for the Saints.

McCarthy, managed an England call-up during his run in net for Southampton last year. Gunn, showed moments of brilliance. And we all know about that amazing streak Forster went on a few seasons ago. But, for all the good moments these three goalkeepers have had just as many that left supporters scratching their heads asking “What was he doing there?”

Gunn, started the season as Hasenhuttl’s first choice keeper but lost his spot after that match against Leicester and has only played in cup matches since. Despite this, I believe he is the right choice to be in net when football resumes.

We have to remember he is still young and he has been prone to mental errors but he is likely our most talented keeper. He is aggressive coming out to claim crosses and corners, and has shown he can make some stunning reaction saves we just do not see out of the other two keepers.

McCarthy, is a bang average keeper and I think he is perfect to be in net until Gunn develops into the keeper he is capable of being. Forster, as much as we all want to see him return to the form he once had, is likely past his prime and will probably never play another match for Saints.
