Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 7

Ralph unsurprisingly went with the same starting eleven from the match against Norwich.  There were calls for changes at right-back and the return of Shane Long perhaps would have restored his partnership with Ings, but rewarding those who are fit and won 3-0 appeared to be a logical decision.  As the game went on, it appeared Hasenhuttl would have been best off making a few changes to the lineup. At halftime, he made necessary adjustments, but nothing worked out.  His team made huge errors to beat themselves against an Arsenal side who sat back and tried to counter.

Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 5

Going to be remembered for the errant pass leading to the first Arsenal goal, however, he did make a huge save with his thumb with Aubameyang 1v1.  Was not forced to do much else, but he does need to improve his distribution and one has to wonder if Gunn deserves another shot.

Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 7

Came out with a really lively first half, drilling a couple crosses in, nearly picking out Armstrong after teaming up with Ings.  Continued in the second half, with an excellent run which eventually setup Ward-Prowse for a strike.  Was one of the few bright spots in a game marred by mistakes.

Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 7

Bailed out Stephens a couple times today.  Was the Saints all-around best defender, and avoided the big error.  Going to have to step up big alongside a new partner for the next three matches.

Jack Stephens, Centre-Back – 6

Aubameyang turned him early on for a break and rolled him again badly in the second half.  Played a nice touch 40 yard pass to Ings which created Southampton’s best first half chance.  Found Long again with a soft touch on a direct ball, creating the Saints’ best second half chance.  The red card was not the best tackle and he does deserve a bit of fault, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he ripped into Hojbjerg in the locker room.

Yan Valery, Right-Back – 3

Looks lacking confidence and had a lot of trouble with Aubameyang and Saka attacking his side.  Did not create anything going forward, and was given chances to do so.  At the end of the half you could see signs of the Saints forcing the ball away from Valery, and Hasenhuttl decided it was time for a change by half.
