Southampton: Saints are reportedly in the hunt for Danny Welbeck
Southampton are rumoured to be leading the chase for Danny Welbeck as his buyout clause dropped significantly due to Watford being relegated.
Now, that Watford have been relegated, players like Welbeck have a clause that drastically decreases their buyout clause so they can make a return to the Premier League. Because of that, Southampton are now interested.
In a report from the Sun, the player would cost the Saints only £5.5m. Financially, this is a great deal but I do not see how Welbeck would necessarily fit into the squad. The only way I could see a world that this move would make sense is if Sofiane Boufal is moved somewhere else.
If Boufal or any winger/attacker aren’t moved there would be a log jam at that position. So until we sell other players, I do not see this move happening and it may just be a rumour.
The 29-year-old, only scored 2 goals for Watford in the league last season and I just do not think he is the type of player Ralph would like to bring in. There are other, younger options out there that would make more sense.
I suspect the Englishman will find himself on a Premier League team this season but I do not think he will be on the South Coast wearing the Red and White of the Saints.
We are less than a month away from the first match of the new season and the Saints will be ready to go and make a run for European competition.
