Adams needs a goal – again

As the ball fell to Che Adams in the penalty area after nine minutes, those watching waited to see which form of the striker would appear before them.

Would it be the striker overthinking things and missing good chances to get a first goal of the season, or would it be the brutal goalscorer who emerged at the back end of the 2019/20 season.

Sadly for Saints, it looks like elements of the former are back in Adams’ game at the moment.

He struck his shot here well but straight at Hugo Lloris in the middle of the goal – just like he had done last weekend where he was denied by the equally strong hands of Crystal Palace’s Vicente Guaita.

Adams went on to have three further chances to score which, with the pressure of a first goal of the season off his shoulders, he might have done better with. According to the Stats Zone app, he has missed three opportunities that can be classed as ‘big chances’ already in 2020/21.

It is important he stays in the starting line-up for now and receives the support he needs to get off the mark once again.
