Southampton vs West Bromwich Albion: Premier League – Player Ratings
By Erik Franzo
Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders
Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 8
Chose the same 11 who conquered Burnley at Turf Moor. Instilled a few new attacking attacks which created opportunities and seems to have muted the dramatic high line. Predictably only used 2 of his 3 subs and will be on the phone all evening.
Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 7
Quiet first half due to team performance, growing comfortable in possession, but is still unnerving at times. Made a huge foot save on a redirected FK as his first and only notable contribution.
Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 6
Picked a couple opportunities to run forward and his timing wasn’t quite right. Played like he was frustrated today, maybe being overlooked by the three lions again is getting to him?
Jannik Vestergaard, Centre-Back – 8
Showing more spring in his step with a silky smooth first touch, it is not a surprise he earned another start over Stephens. Defended well when needed and may have claimed a regular place.
Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 8
Really good at pressing the direct pass to Callum Robinson, disrupting a number of West Brom attacks. Just missed scoring with a glancing header. Pretty clean game all-around.
Kyle Walker-Peters, Centre-Back – 9
Excellent individual play on the ball as Southampton really worked the baggies left side. Nearly slid Ings in on a similar attack which resulted in the goal against Burnley. Dynamic, athletic, and plays a lot like Nathan Redmond from the wing-back position. Showed his finishing needs a bit of work, but an amazing performance from the Tottenham signing.
