As the transfer window wore on, it became obvious that Saints were going to try and bring in an extra winger – especially with the departure of Sofiane Boufal.

The Athletic also confirm that Gray was a target and that Saints enquired about his availability as they looked to add to their attacking ranks.

The 24-year-old has slipped down the pecking order at Leicester and appears to be on the periphery of Brendan Rodgers’ squad at the moment.

Initial discussions were had, but Saints quickly moved on to other players and ended up getting Theo Walcott through the door on deadline day.
