In the same article, Dan Sheldon of the Athletic confirms that Nelson was also considered as a potential loan signing.

However, as with Demarai Gray, talks did not progress to a point where a deal was considered close despite Saints registering their interest in the England youngster.

The 20-year-old impressed during a loan spell in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim back in the 2018/19 season and earned a chance to fully break into Arsenal’s senior setup.

Since then, his first-team minutes have been patchy with the Gunners and he has only started one League Cup game so far in 2020/21.
