Chelsea vs Southampton: Premier League – Player Ratings
By Erik Franzo
Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders
Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 8
Handed Walcott is re-debut and otherwise went with his trusted lineup. Looked disappointed in some of his team’s performances, but they hung in their and responded well after half time. Has injected belief in this side that they can always score, even against the top 6.
Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 6
Made a couple tough early saves before conceding the Chelsea opener. Then looked lost as Timo Werner lobbed him for the second goal. Mixes good with bad and the ball at his feet is overwhelmingly bad. Hasenhuttl likes him, but Forster may earn a chance before long.
Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 5
Not sure what he did in this game other than be his cheeky self. Evidence A – winning the free kick which helped earn a point. Evidence B – throwing Kai Havertz down by the neck.
Jannik Vestergaard, Centre-Back – 8
First risk he took could have been a costly giveaway, but Kante gave it straight back to Southampton. Defended fairly well otherwise with many questioning his ability to keep up with Chelsea pace. Huge credit to the big man getting low to flick in Walcott’s shot to earn the team a point.
Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 4
Won a couple headers early on, but was fooled badly by Werner in the build up to the first goal. Destroyed again by the German for the second goal. Not many notable defensive moments period, although he covered Vestergaard well after getting nutmegged by Ziyech.
Kyle Walker-Peters, Right-Back – 8
Was Southampton’s best player throughout the first half. Attacked 1v1, defended in key areas and was most often the way forward for Saints. Great signing, just a great signing.
