Midfielders
James Ward-Prowse, Centre-Midfielder – 8
Same old same old for the Southampton captain. It may be fair to say his legs look a little heavy from the last year of play, but does all the little things that do not show up on the stat sheet.
Oriol Romeu, Centre-Midfielder – 7
Played an important role tracking midfielder runs into the Saints’ penalty area. Lacked the pace to keep up and got away with some risky passes. Allowed Werner to cut across the entire net for the first goal. The timing of his press was his strength throughout the game. Romeu helped win the ball leading to Ings’ goal and also picked out a Jorginho-like pass to put Adams in for the second.
Nathan Redmond, Attacking-Midfielder – 5
One instance where he picked up the ball with room to run in the first half. Isn’t taking the risks he is likely afforded by his manager in the attacking third. Subbed off for Nathan Tella after 77 minutes when he is presumably fit is a sign Hasenhuttl needs more.
Theo Walcott, Attacking-Midfielder – 7
Always nice to see a fresh face in the Southampton side. Took Armstrong’s role and found the ball in positive position early on. Appeared confused when defending the wing with Chillwell, but appears fit and ran at Chelsea late. Definition of “grew into the game,” and finished strong, volleying the ball on target before Vestergaard nicked it in.
