Southampton came back from two deficits on Saturday to secure a point against Chelsea in what was a thrilling match that saw six goals.

Resilience would be the best word to describe the performance Southampton put in over the weekend. After taking a punch in the mouth from Chelsea in the form of two Timo Werner goals, Southampton clawed their way back into the match and managed to draw to take a point away from a match that they could have easily just rolled over in.

We learned a lot about the Saints in this match and let us take a look at the three key takeaways from it.

Vestergaard is a new man

The Centre-back seemed to have one foot out the door multiple times this summer and many fans would have been fine with him moving away from the club. Ask them that now their answer will likely be very different from the one they would have given in July.

The Dane is playing fantastic football and really seems to be growing into his own out there. Now, this makes Hasenhuttl’s task of deciding his centre-back paring even more difficult. I suspect we will see a pairing of Salisu and Bednarek or Salisu and Vestergaard here soon. But in the meantime I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Jannik Vestergaard play for the Saints.

I think his performances will only grow along with his confidence and we could see the makings of a very good defender in the Premier League.
