Southampton vs Everton: Premier League – Saints Player Ratings
By Erik Franzo
Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders
Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 9
Chose his trusted 11 with Stuart Armstrong returning from a COVID-19 absence. Let his team run to the 80th minute per usual, using the 10 men Everton side as a training exercise. Used Diallo as an attacking-midfielder and handed a debut to Dan N’Lundulu. Looks to have his team back to expected fitness levels and outclassed the Premier League points leaders.
Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 7
A save on a set piece, a catch from a cross, and a good punch were his contributions in the first 45 minutes. Played with his feet for the entirety of the second.
Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 9
Off to his cheeky self a minute into the match, falling over to win a dangerous set piece. Wanted to attack early, something we were missing in recent weeks. Actually looked better than Redmond when attacking down the left side. Deserved an assist for his performance, but perhaps a new contract will suffice.
Jannik Vestergaard, Centre-Back – 9
Not a lot to do in the first half, but his poise with the ball continued to shine. Shared the ball really well and nearly scored again from a Southampton corner. A complete revelation this season, stepping up to PL level and quieting all his doubters.
Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 9
Quiet first half and made amends for one small error he made attempting to redirect an Everton cross. No mistakes otherwise and paired with Jannik to totally shutdown Calvert-Lewin.
Kyle Walker-Peters, Right-Back – 7.5
Not much to do in the first half with Southampton in possession and looking to the left side. Picked up a yellow for a poor handball he was upset with himself about, but it did no harm, only Lucas Digne did stepping down his achilles for the straight red.
