Stephens unnatural but provides something different

Jack Stephens appeared in the starting line-up to replace Ryan Bertrand this evening and took up the left-back role despite clearly not being a natural in that position.

However, as Saints attacked down their stronger right flank on the night, Stephens provided something different.

Whereas Ryan Bertrand may join the attack, Stephens stayed in a central position and acted as an additional central-midfielder/centre-back.

This meant that he was available to receive a pass but could also be there to help halt any fast breaks from Newcastle.
