Armstrong Seals the Deal

A late second was no more than the St Mary’s side deserved.

Oriol Romeu had a drive touched onto the bar, Jan Bednarek saw a header cleared off the line, while Walcott was denied by a last-ditch challenge.

With the end of the match looming, United appeared to have snuffed out a Southampton charge just outside the area. Armstrong however, had other ideas.

The Newcastle defence appear initially to have snuffed out the danger. However, as the team tries to pass the ball out, things go wrong.

Sean Longstaff fails to take full control of a quick pass and Armstrong muscles him out. The Scottish international then drills a superb finish past the keeper. A supremely confident way to end an historic night at St Mary’s.
