Southampton had a chance to briefly climb to the top of the table with a victory over Newcastle and they seized the opportunity with both hands.

Southampton won 2-0 over the visitors and really dominated the match from start to finish. They could have easily scored more than the 2 goals they ended with but they will not care because they took all 3 points.

There were some questions looming over the side going into this match and a lot of those questions were answered. Let us take a look at key takeaways from this match.

Could the Saints score without Danny Ings?

This was the first match without the leading goal scorer because of a knee injury and a lot of people were wondering where the goals would come from without Ings on the pitch.

Well, we got our answer and it came in the form of Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong. Theo Walcott could have easily found himself on the scoresheet and Jan Bednarek had two quality shots on target.

Do not get me wrong, we will still feel the absence of Danny Ings in the coming matches but the players have shown they are able to step up and get the job done when need be.

We sorely missed Ryan Bertrand

The left-back was out with a hamstring problem and in his place stepped-up Jack Stephens. The natural centre-back did ok over on the left but it was clear he was uncomfortable out there and the attack on the left was missing its typical vigour.

Hopefully, Bertrand returns for the Wolves match but this really showed a larger issue at the club and that is a lack of depth at the full-back positions.

This January we may see the club go after another left-back just to ensure we can cover if there are any other injuries in the future.

Romeu is like a new player

The midfielder’s current form has been a blast to watch. He is playing with so much energy on both sides of the ball and is now launching venomous shots from deep like it is second nature.

He and Ward-Prowse have been a big reason for the Saints form this season and if he continues to play like this Southampton will have to feel good about where they are at.

Diallo is likely the future going forward in the midfield but until he is ready Romeu is showing he has plenty left in the tank.
