A strong set piece game saw Saints two goals to the good at the break. Jan Bednarek headed in from a corner while James Ward Prowse netted a cracking freekick.

The result sees Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men remain in fifth place on 18 points.

SFC had the lead in the first but certainly did not have it all their own way. United were happy to push and press high up the pitch as Southampton made sloppy unforced errors.

At one stage Alex McCarthy was called upon to make multiple saves after misplacing a pass. Mason Greenwood also should have netted for his club after a mixup between McCarthy and Jannik Vestergaard left the goal wide open.

With the introduction of Edinson Cavani at the break the hosts’ lead looked fragile. Manchester United went on to prosper as old ghosts haunted the red-and-white army.
